- Biography/History:

with Prof. Graeme Clark, Director of Bionic Ear Institute and Laureate Professor of Otolaryngology. Prof. Clark was appointed in 1970 as Foundation Prof. Of Otolaryngology at the University of Melbourne. In 1978, after many biological and engineering breakthroughs, Prof. Clark implanted the first multiple-electrode bionic ear in the world. After further useful clinical trials in 1985 the bionic ear became the first multiple-channel cochlear implant to be approved by the Federal Drugs Administration (FDA) in the United States. In 1985 Prof. Clark implanted the first multiple-electrode bionic ear in a child. In 1985 Prof. Clark founded the Bionic Ear Institute (East Melbourne). He also established the first university training in audiology in Australia, and was instrumental in setting up the Australian Deafness Council. After a world-wide trial, in 1990 the use of the ear was approved by the FDA for children two years of age and above.
