Intended for outreach workers, community development workers, tutors, managers, and coordinators, this guide focuses on how laptop computers are and could be used innovatively and resourcefully for basic skills, outreach, and widening participation generally. Chapter 1 introduces aims and management of the Laptop Initiative for Adult and Community Learning that provided laptops for use in outreach. Chapter 2 defines outreach, considers the why and how of outreach and provides a table with stages of outreach and models for consideration. Chapter 3 provides summaries and examples of ways organizations are working to successfully encourage adults to learn and become competent users of information and communication technology (ICT)--supporting existing provision, loans to groups, coordinated projects, promotional events, taster sessions, supporting existing project work, and linking with others. Chapter 4 on developing a project team, lists roles and qualifications of the project leader and these team members: program manager, outreach worker, support technician, technical support staff, and ICT tutor. Chapter 5 addresses funding. Chapter 6 focuses on choosing software, hardware, peripherals, and extras, provides a buyers' guide to laptops, and lists software available. Chapter 7 offers suggestions for working with the media. Chapter 8 discusses evaluation. Examples of paperwork developed to support equipment loan are appended. (YLB)
