- Summary:
-
A detailed analysis was conducted of all master's degree programs in physics in the United States, including those that offer a master's as their highest physics program and those that have a master's program in parallel with the Ph.D. program. Data were collected from colleges and universities with master's degree programs and through phone interviews with department chairs or directors of graduate studies of each of the 186 departments on the target list. Professional master's degree programs were considered to be those that addressed the needs of the economy as well as the needs of students by providing fundamental knowledge and specialized skills. Professional master's degree programs had some combination of features in these categories: (1) bridge building; (2) programmatic emphasis; (3) research experiences; and (4) nontechnical aspects. Using these criteria, 22 physics departments were identified as having the strongest professional master's degree programs, and 17 were deemed strong. Twenty-three programs were designated as new professional master's degree programs. These programs were considered to have desirable features but were too new to be evaluated adequately. Six appendixes contain additional information about the studies and the research methodology, including brief profiles of the programs analyzed. (SLD)
