Academic support has long been accepted as a major role of school counselors, yet many believe that traditional roles will not be enough for school counselors in the twenty-first century. This chapter focuses on how school counselors will need to expand their understanding of what academic support means in terms of learning and academic outcomes. Specifically, future school counselors will need to more fully define academic support in terms of building and providing programs and interventions that will directly engage the learning needs of children. The chapter highlights the process of building the school as a learning community and the specific skills and qualities necessary to construct successful learning supports. These skills include motivation and interest; goal setting; study organization and climate; time management and task analysis; memory and listening skills; note taking and test taking; cognitive mapping strategies; and knowledge of learning styles and modalities. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the school counselor as an advocate. (GCP)
