Voices of the bush oral history project

Summary

Folkloric recording. Colin Howe recalls life in the Dubbo, N.S.W. and Brewarrina, N.S.W. area. Ernie Couley recalls his family's move from the city to Coonamble, N.S.W. Both men recall starting their job as sleeper cutters in the early part of the 20th century. They talk about the history of the sleeper cutting industry in New South Wales; how the job was done, the tools and equipment used and the arrival of mechanisation (power saws, etc); forestry regulations imposed upon cutters; working conditions. Howe, his wife Neoline and Couley recall country living in a small community in the early part of the 20th century; the decline in country services, community spirit and rural populations. They discuss Noelene's family band; old time dances; the Timber Workers Union.
