This document is comprised of a training package to help practitioners strengthen relationships with parents. Designed for use with direct service staff and their supervisors from various programs, the package can be used for group training or in individual training and supervision. The package has three components: (1) a 22-minute videotape with 7 vignettes of providers and families working together to show how strong, collaborative relationships with families look and feel; (2) a companion book for providers serving young children and their families; and (3) a videotape guide. The vignettes presented in the videotape focus on the following themes: (1) use what you know; (2) point out the positive; (3) take time to listen; (4) acknowledge parents' feelings; (5) refocus issues on the child; (6) understand parents' view of their child; and (7) ask for help. The video guide outlines a general framework for discussion that applies to all the vignettes and poses additional exploration and application questions for specific vignettes. Throughout the accompanying book on partnering with parents are references to vignettes from the videotape and reflective questions to help staff think about how the situations portrayed in the vignettes relate to their own work. The chapters of the book are: (1) "All The Things You Already Do Make a Difference for Families"; (2) "Interactions Have an Important Impact on Your Work"; (3) "Behavior Has Meaning (You Just Don't Always Know Right Away What It Means)"; and (4) "Learning and Growing Together with Families." The materials emphasize that being considerate, interested, curious, and respectful of parents is the most important thing providers can do--for their relationship with the parent and with the child.
