This guide was developed to share successful Community Service Learning (CSL) instructional practices. It presents units that can be replicated and adapted for varying grade levels and curricular goals. The guide notes that as students use newly acquired academic knowledge and skills to address real issues in their communities, they often gain proficiency in more than one discipline and refine higher order thinking skills. The 14 lessons in the guide provide school location, subject areas, area of service, grade level, and author and designer information. The lessons are: (1) "Emergency Room" (Elementary); (2) "Safety on the Bus" (Elementary); (3) "Cool New Kid Handbook" (Elementary/Middle School); (4) "Vernal Pools" (Elementary/Middle School); (5) "Ordinary Heroes" (Elementary/High School); (6) "Literacy Leaders" (Elementary/Middle School/High School); (7) "Veterans" (Middle School); (8) "Community Garden" (Middle School); (9) "Zoo Project" (Middle School); (10) "Let Their Voices Be Heard" (Middle School); (11) "Nature Trail" (High School); (12) "American Dream Quilt" (High School); (13) "Responsibilities of Citizenship" (High School); and (14) "Senior-Senior Prom" (High School). (Contains addendum resources.) (BT)
