Neil Morrison talks about his Scottish family background; his parents; his childhood; his schooling and his brothers at Melville College, Edinburgh; religion; Clan Morrison tartan; the Morrison Clan and its connection with Uist, Scotland; the move to Bolton, England (aged, 9); life in Bolton; the beginning of his move to Australia (aged, 12); spending time at his uncle William Morrison's house in Birmingham, England; the two weeks spent at the Child Immigration home in Birmingham; his trip out to Australia on the Orana (ship) and his first impressions of Australia; Fairbridge farm, Molong, N.S.W.; life on the farm and attending the government school; Ronald Morrison's arrival in the second party from England; Australian poetry; moving on to a farm job near the Fairbridge farm; during WWII the wounding of his brother, John Morrison, the trip to see him; the Gulliver household in Linfield, N.S.W.; his job as copy boy at the Daily Telegraph; the Packer family; joining the Army on the 5 August 1944; the Japanese P.O.W. breakout, Cowra, N.S.W.; P.O.W. camp, Bathurst, N.S.W.; being stationed in Japan for four years with the British Occupation Force after WWII was over; the devastation left by the war; becoming a teacher at the school for Army dependents in Japan during his fourth and final year in Japan.
Morrison discusses how on his return to Australia, he achieved his teaching diploma and moved onto university; his marriage and starting a family; making ends meet, studying; teaching; working as an inspector in metropolitan Sydney schools; the development of his interest in poetry and music; working for the N.S.W. Minister of Education; finishing a Law degree, joining the Bar Association and his career as a barrister; his three children and their accomplishments; his love of singing throughout his life; a stint as Deputy President of the Arts Council and his involvement in an arts in schools committee; his involvement in swimming and soccer during his time as a teacher.
