- Summary:
-
Colour lithographic poster advertising a set of four stamps and associated products issued to commemorate the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on 1 November 2010. The Cup’s popularity arose from its handicap conditions in a race run over two miles, now 3,200 metres, for horses of at least three years of age. This made the Melbourne Cup open to all runners, and so it had the capacity to bring together people from diverse social backgrounds. Before long, it became known as "the race that stops a nation”. The stamps feature the 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy itself, and three significant and much-loved winners of the race. Featured are Carbine, the 1890 winner, Phar Lap from 1930 and Saintly the 1996 winner. Across the centre of the poster are the stamp images and below this the postal and numismatic cover and prestige booklet . The poster background is variegated deep pink with a floral motif. From the zero in the number 150, of the caption, are many small number 150s radiating out.
