MS Acc12.068 comprises (i) Manuscript journal of Vigor's expedition on the HMS Havannah to Auckland, Whangaroa in New Zealand, the New Hebrides (Vanuatu), the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji. Vigor provides detailed descriptions of the places and people he encounters on his voyage. There are also details of the bartering and acquisitions he makes (13 Jul-11 Nov 1850) -- (ii) Sketchbook from the Havannah expedition. Includes pencil sketches of coastal scenes, views of harbours, beaches and geological features, Pacific Islanders and of artefacts from the Pacific Islands (1850-1851) -- (iii) Notebook labelled 'South Sea Islands. Australia. NSW. South Australia. 1850.' Includes sketches from the Havannah expedition of aretfacts, harbour views, maps, portraits of Aboriginal people from New South Wales, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Also includes language notes and diary entries recording Vigor's expedition to the gold fields around Bathurst and the Turon River, New South Wales (1850-1851) -- (iv) 12 rough sketches of the New South Wales gold diggings. Also includes a description of the drawings (1852).
(v) Diary of the proceedings of Philip Doyne Vigors, XI Regiment on board of the convict ship Pestongee Bomange during a voyage from Deptford near London to Hobart town, Van Diemens Land. Also includes sketches (10 Aug 1848-2 Jan 1849) -- (vi) Australian diary and almanac - Daily entries by Vigors when on military service stationed in the penal establishment of Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour. Vigor's also records his collecting of botanical specimens and artefacts (1849) -- (vii) Approximately 60 letters by Vigors to family members, including many journal letters providing a daily account of his life and adventures, including some from the Havannah voyage (1847-1857) -- (viii) Approximately 74 letters received by Vigors whilst in Australia, mostly from family members (1849-1860). Also includes an issue of 'The Australian' (17 Sep 1861) -- (ix) Letterbook entitled 'My letters. Private. 1849 to 1853 Sydney N.S. Wales'. Includes details of all personal letters received and sent by P.D. Vigors, including a summary of content. -- (x) Drawings by Vigors - Of shells found at Port Essington; head and shoulders ink and wash portrait of a woman; 48 coloured drawings of shells gathered around Sydney, 1 Jan 1850 (2 fol. items).

Philip Doyne Vigors joined the British 11th Regiment of Foot (army) in 1846 and was stationed in New South Wales from 1849-1858. From 13 July to 11 November 1850 Vigors sailed on the corvette HMS Havannah on a four month expedition, during which time he visited Auckland and Whangaroa in New Zealand, the New Hebrides (Vanuatu), the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji. He also spent a month at Turon and Sofala visiting the New South Wales gold diggings in 1851. In December 1880 he was Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army and stationed in Washington DC. Later in life he was Vice President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. He was also an enthusiastic genealogist. He was the father of Esther Alice Vigors. He died at Holloden, Bagnalstown, County Carlow on 30 December 1903.
