Summary

Covers the early explorations and discoveries on 3 continents: Africa (v. 1-5), Asia (v. 5-11), and America (v. 12-15). Materials on French, English, Dutch, and Portugese explorers and settlements are included throughout. Vols. on Africa cover primarily coastal countries of West, Southern, and Eastern Africa, plus the Congo, Madagascar, Arabia and the Persian Gulf areas. Vols. on Asia cover China, Korea, Tibet, Japan, Philippines, and countries bordering the Indian Ocean. V. 11 includes Australia and Antarctica. Vols. 12-15 cover voyages and discoveries in America, including the East Indies, South, Central and North America.

Notes

Vols. 1-7, are translation by Prévost d'Exiles, with some omissions and variations, of: A new general collection of voyages and travels / compiled by John Green. London : T. Astley, 1745-47.

Title varies in v. 16-19. V. 16 has title: Table alphabt́ique des matiéres contenues dans les XV volumes ; v. 17, Suite de l'histoire générale des voyages ... pour servir de supplement a l'édition de Paris; v. 15 & 18, Continuation de l'Histoire générale des voyages.

Publisher varies in v. 15-19. V. 17 has imprint: Amsterdam : Arkstée et Merkus, 1761. Imprint of v. 18 is Paris : Rozet, 1768; and of v. 19, Paris : Panckoucke, 1770.

Vol. 16 contains index to v. 1-15. V. 17 contains supplements to v. 8-11 of the Paris ed. and v. 10-15 of the Amsterdam ed.
