- Summary:
-
Bartholomew 'Bart' Saggers born in England arrived in Australia in 1926. He went straight on the track where he picked up with a succession of professional swagmen, who he says gave him the best possible education by teaching him to keep "his wits about him". He and his English wife Betty lived in a house, he designed and built. He then wrote his reminiscences, poems, letters and painted. Barney tells of his time round the track in Queensland until the mid 1930's when he went to Brisbane and settled at the Gym (a camp of single unemployed men); meeting his wife a recently arrived migrant; his stories of characters he met on the track; techniques of survival; their struggle to rear a family; building their home on the country fringe; the way they suceeded despite their lack of family or neighbours they could call on for assistance.
