- Summary:
-
This informant migrated to Australia as a domestic servant. She relates stories about her life as a servant in the country; her struggles to help support her young children by doing needlework for local shops; the privation of her life in N.S.W. country town while her husband was away working in the bush. In the 1920's she married for the second time and the family lived in a humpy at Sutherland on the fringe of Sydney while they saved for a home. This house was destroyed by fire shortly after it was built. Influenced by the conditions of her life and by members of the unemployed who were camping nearby (including one member of the I.W.W. Twelve) she became active in radical politics. She later moved into Sydney and became active in the Textile Industry union. The family eventually moved to Melbourne where her husband got his first job early in the war years.
