- Summary:
-
Gil worked in the timber industry in Melbourne from the time he was a young man. He was president of the Victorian branch of the Timber Workers' Union for ten years, embracing the great strike of 1929. The strike was seen by the trade union movement as being of vital significance, being considered the first general battle between capital and labour of the Depression. The strike was also seen as a trial of strength between the newly formed A.C.T.U. and the employers' organisations. The strike ended in defeat despite the massive support from other unions. After the strike Gil, who had been active in addressing meetings, picketing etc. was retained on a nominal wage to organise unemployed workers.
