Bill Miller had just retired from his job with the Footscray Council where he had worked since the Depression at the time of this interview. During the Depression he was a leader of the Footscray Unemployed Association, which was one of the most militant and successful group on unemployed in Melbourne. He discusses people who were working for the unemployed in Footscray and centrally; the way in which the unemployed workers were able to influence the local council to help them, through employing a combination of militancy and reasonableness; the techniques of organising and mobilising the unemployed into action; eviction struggles; the great eviction (or rather anti-eviction demonstrations) on behalf of one of the eight families in Simpson St. who were under threat of eviction at the same time.
