1849年, 葡萄牙澳门总督亚马留公然宣布澳门为自由港, 关闭设在澳门的粤海关办事处, 驱逐清朝政府在澳官吏, 对澳门实行殖民统治, 史称'亚马留事件'. 本书研究该事件之后, 到民国年间的20世纪30年代, 葡萄牙通过"澳门殖民地组织章程", 在这样一个特殊的社会环境里, 澳门华人互助组织的性质及其对澳门整体社会发展所造成的影响.
