- Biography/History:
-
Yagan (c. 1795 - 11 July 1833) was an Australian Aboriginal warrior from the Whadjuk people, a Noongar tribe, who is remembered as a hero due to his role in early indigenous Australian resistance to British settlement and rule in the area of Perth, Western Australia. A Government bounty was offered for his capture, dead or alive, and a young settler shot and killed him. Yagan's execution figured in Aboriginal folklore as a symbol of the unjust and sometimes brutal treatment of the indigenous peoples of Australia by colonial settlers.
