Introduction by David Attenborough. "This book contains the complete plates drawn by Edward Lear for John Gould. They have been gathered from the following publications: The birds of Europe (1832-1837), A monograph of the Ramphastidae or Family of Toucans (1834), The birds of Australia and the adjacent Islands (1837-1838) and A monograph of the Trogonidae or Family of Trogons (1838). The drawing of Trogon gigas made in preparation for A monograph of the Trogonidae was found amongst the contents of Gould's studio after his death." -- Verso t.p.

Limited edition: "The edition is limited to 780 signed [by David Attenborough] and numbered copies and 20 lettered copies which are not for sale" -- prelim.

" ...reproduced from the collection of David Attenborough by DOT graduations and printed by APPL on natural evolution paper. The book is bound by Smith Settle in Nigerian goatskin leather from Hartmatan. The endpapers are by Jemma Lewis." -- Prelim.

Facsimile reproduction of Attenborough's original collection of Edward Lear's illustrations in one volume, 19th century binding, gilt patterned spine and covers, 5 raised bands, hand-painted "Turkish Spot" marbled endpapers, gold blocking on front, back, spine and inside edges, shuffled pages, gilded top edge, plates printed on a stock closely matched to the 19th-century paper of Attenborough's original prints, which is perfectly matt. Includes 80 hand-coloured lithographs and one additional drawing.

Presented in a buckram-bound solander box.
