- Description:
-
- [Amsterdam ?] : [ Oost-Indische Companie], ca. 1720-1740. (folio)
- 3 unnumbered pages ; 33cm. (fol.)
- Summary:
-
The first of three oaths to be sworn by three different groups of people in service of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). The first is for those in the first class as specified in the Resolution of 7 May 1669, with a list at the end. It includes various kinds of Bookkeepers, Office clerks of the higher level.
- Notes:
-
- Wood cut illuminated letter "I" for the word IK commencing the 2nd paragraph.
- Printed on laid paper with countermark "TH" and watermark "Amsterdam Coat of Arms".
- Library copy: Untrimmed with all deckles intact and never sewn or bound.
- Each of the three oaths is printed on a single bifolium with the first leaf signed "A". so they maybe treated as separate publications, but they match typographically and are all printed on the same paperstock.
- “Among the printing types used is Nicolaus Kis’s Parangon roman and italic, which have not been noted in Dutch printing before 1698 (outside Kis’s own specimen). The closest matches to the watermark that we have found in the literature date from the years 1717 to 1729 (Heawood 394, 399, 403; Voorn, Noord-Hollaand 62), though none has the countermark TH and they do not match closely enough to provide a reliable date. Landwehr records only 1 Eed van suyvering (without suggesting a date) and it is not for any of our groups, but for the “Bewindhebbers” (the directors). The Goldsmiths’-Kress Library has the directors or some other group. Petit has a similar entry, described as ca. 1700.” -- (Southeast Asia-ASHER catalogue : December list no. 44)
