- Summary:
-
"Although they are in important respects similar economies with well-aligned commercial interests, Australia and Canada have strong, and strengthening, trade ties to their own geographic regions that are augmented by (different sets of) regional trade agreements (RTAs). Our review of the nature, growth and prospects for trade between the two economies suggests that there is significant potential for expanding services trade, especially through direct investments (foreign affiliates). There is some scope for government action to support this expansion, especially, by liberalizing investment review requirements and the regulations affecting the movement of people between the two economies. Increased support for private actions (or delegated legislation) to improve mutual recognition of qualifications and accreditation standards in professional services in the two economies would also help bilateral services trade. An augmented gravity model of Australia's and Canada's merchandise trade suggests that, if well-established trends continue, there is at best modest potential for the expansion of bilateral exchanges. A comprehensive trans-Pacific RTA (the "Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement) that included Canada and possibly Japan would "disrupt" some of these established trends leading, conceivably, to improved prospects for bilateral trade in goods."--Summary of findings and recommendations.
