MS Acc11.178 comprises a folder holding correspondence from Mary Gilmore, a folder of photographs with a biography, seven monographs of fiction and verse, for example Hound of the road, Marri'd and other verses, some of which are annotated and hold dedications to particular (Mercy) sisters. Mary Gilmore was living in Goulburn in the 1920s where she was involved in a charitable guild administered by the Sisters of Mercy, Goulburn (1 box).

Poet, prose writer and journalist. Mary Jean Gilmore (née Cameron) was born in Mary Vale, Woodhouselee, near Goulburn, New South Wales in 1865. Her verse first appeared in the Australian worker in 1902, and from 1908-1931 she edited the women's page of this newspaper. Her first published volume, Marri'd and other verses, appeared in 1910. Other publications followed and, in 1937, she was made a Dame of the British Empire, the first woman to receive this award for services to literature. Gilmore was a founder of the Lyceum Club, Sydney, and a founder and vice-president in 1928 of the Fellowship of Australian Writers. The Sisters of Mercy, Goulburn Congregational Centre managed the records of homes for which the Sisters of Mercy were responsible in the Catholic Diocese of Goulburn, including St. Joseph's Orphanage and St. John's Home, Goulburn which amalgamated into St. John's Home, Auburn Street in 1975. In 2011 the Sisters of Mercy Goulburn Congregation joined the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea.
