- London : Agent-General for Queensland, [between 1880 and 1891]
- 1 broadside : colour maps ; 43 x 28 cm
- Summary:
-
An immigration poster, mounted on thick board, with two brass-reinforced holes at the top for hanging (as originally issued). In the 1880s the Queensland government embarked on scheme of developing village settlements (to overcome what the poster refers to as the "great drawback" of isolation), based on the concept of the settlers living together in a village with "all its attendant advantages (railway and road communication with markets, schools, etc., etc.)" and farming a block of nearby agricultural land. This poster offers 40, 80, and 160 acres and a town lot for £5, £10 and £20, payable as £1, £2, or £4 yearly for five years. A specimen plan depicts Wullumbilla (west of Roma), with block prices, and a map of Queensland shows the location of other settlements, which are also listed in a table with the number of farms. Twenty-nine village settlements were surveyed in Queensland but most did not succeed. (Adapted from bookseller's listing).
