MS Acc13.033 comprises field notes created by Reid whilst commissioned by the New South Wales Department of Health to report on the prevalence and sequelae of torture and imprisonment of refugees residing in Sydney in the 1980s. The field notes document interviews of medical and welfare practitioners, and refugees from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, El Salvador, Uruguay, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran (including Iranian Baha'is), South Africa and Poland. The final report, Torture and trauma: the health care needs of refugee victims in New South Wales, led to the establishment of the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS), a not-for profit charity which has been providing services to refugees in Australia since 1988 (1 packet).

Academic. Janice Clare Reid was born in Adelaide in 1947. She has held various teaching, research and academic appointments, including several at the University of Sydney where she was director of the Centre of Crosscultural Studies, Health and Medicine from 1988 until 1992. She also worked with National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Standing Committees. In 1998 Reid was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Western Sydney. Her research interests have encompassed indigenous and refugee health and health care, and occupational and mental health. Reid, who is a member of the National Library of Australia Council, was created a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1998.
