Eda Genzō Hirotsuna defending the Horikawa Palace in Kyoto against the attacking forces of Tosa-bō Shīshun in 1185. There is a kyôgen play based on the incident: The Attack on the Horikawa Palace Horikawa gosho. The play derives from the Noh play Shozon. Shozon (Tosa-bô Shôshun) goes to Kyoto to kill Yoshitsune at his brother's command. The aggressive action between Benkei (warrior-monk) and Shozon builds tension in the first half of the play. Shozon arrives as Yoshitsune is having a feast with his retainers. Shozon insists he is on a religious pilgrimage and is forced to sign a pledge that he did not come to kill Yoshitsune. When Shozon flees, Yoshitsune commands Benkei to capture Shozon. When he appears Benkei captures him and ties him up. --- some information taken from the website of Cowell-Thackray collection of Japanese woodblock prints and works on paper.
