- Summary:
-
A limited edition artist's book, consisting of coarsely screened or pixilated photographic images and digital collages appropriated from Google Street View, and an extended essay, printed on low-quality newspaper stock like many street press publications. Faceless examines Google Street View in the context of electronic surveillance and the Internet. The essay, "Democratic camera," argues that although the Internet was originally seen as a democratic tool, which would give everyone a voice, the appropriation of it by large corporations raises suspicions through their collection of personal information for commercial gain. The availability of the Internet on personal mobile devices provides an opportunity to put advertising based on their consumer habits, location and lifestyle choices into everyone's pocket, The last section of the essay analyses the photographs of several Street View artists including Jon Rafman, Michael Wolf and Doug Rickard. Ultimately, Davison argues that Street View should be viewed as an archive of images.
