This colour lithographic map reflects the information Japanese school children were being given during the war. A glimpse at the country's resources, compared to those of other countries, graphically illustrated for children to understand. Text down the right margin reads:'Shogakukan's publication of Eight Great tutorial magazines are interesting and learning-conducive; what is mor, they are designated for grade levels so that no selection is necessary. - they are truely the ideal magazine!! Please recommend them to your friends and acquiaintances for the pleasure of reading!!'. Similar promotional text decorates the left edge, the description of Shogakkan's "Eight Great" tutorial magazines evoking the Eight Great Preceptsof Buddhist teaching. The map at the upper left corner is a "Map of the Japanese Navy (Nihon kaigun chizu); at the upper right a "Map of the Japanese Army"(Nihon Rikugun chizu). Right in the center of the sheet, below the map of Japan with resources marked , is a pie graph "Comparison of paper production" (Kami no seisan hikaku). The big yello slice is America with 79 million tons; Japan has a small slice, "80" which means 8 million . Below that is a block of text, complete with furigana, the small writing on the side of kanji to help children read the characters; "The paper that we all use every day, and which subscribers to Shogakkan's publication of Eight Great magazines calmly crumple up by the millions - the production amuts of this critically essentian paper can be seen in the table above. In global terms, Japan still does not produce as much as other countries, but we can look forward to the quickly approaching day when paper production will be flourishing." In the picture below are shown yung boys and girls who are looking at Shogakkan's publication of Eight Great magazines and study newspapers. At right is a table of "Production amounts of the main Japanese products," from right to lest, top to bottom: oil, porcelain, tobacco, tea, oranges, apples, each indicated by symbol along with the amonts produced in various regions. The bar graphs to the left show (from right to left, top to bottom) pigs, horses, cows, metal, silver, coal. At lower right, next to the world map is "A table of our country's trade" with pie charts listed by port, in order of how much import'export moved through them: Kobe, Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya and Moji. Above the world map, a little boy peeks out from a chart showing trends in the populations of different countries. Pictorial diagrams give information about rice production and flour. The biggest sack is Russia, with America & Canada next in size.) A chart in red, yellow and brown compares the national defense spending, in units of hundred million yen. The oval chart on the left of the national products map shows national debt & wealth, per capita. The biggest debt is carried by England at top, France to the right, America below that, then Japan in the black shirt, Germany to the left & Italy above that. The square chart at the far left shows "Amounts of principal national products": rice, corn, salt, cotton& wool cloth, raw silk thread, and woven silk. A graphically enticing illustration of Japan's place in the world in 1931.
