Evelyn Bland speaks about her birth and childhood in Malta during World War II; her family life and schooling in Malta; migration to Queanbeyan in 1949; her first impressions of Australia; her father’s employment in the Snowy Mountains Scheme; her families adaptation to life in Australia; being allowed to attend dances with her brothers despite a generally strict upbringing; becoming an instructor at Mal Straughn’s Dance Studio where she met her future husband; marriage and romance ; her husband’s work; her children and how Australian they are; her first impressions of Canberra; community gatherings; the growth of new construction around the city; church life; running a business in a public service town; Canberra’s change to a more multicultural population; meeting the Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul II; her visit to Malta; her values and beliefs and her hopes for the future.
