Ian Bland speaks about his birth in Canberra and living in Anzac Parade, Reid; working from age 10 after his father’s death when he was 7; his schooling and technical expertise with radios; learning to dance at Mal Straughn’s studio and meeting his future wife there; his dry cleaning business; the geography and nature of Canberra as a public service city; going into business with Gus Staines, an electronics whizz from the Australian National University; migrant influences on the culture and cuisine of Canberra during the 1950s and 1960s; family objections to his marriage; the impact of filling Lake Burley Griffin in 1964 and the bushfires in 2003; community complaints regarding development; his work life; setting up his electronics repair business, Associated Electronics in Fyshwick; his retirement and dancing at the Seniors Club; the Probus Club; changes to Canberra over the last 75 years ; changes to technology; handing his electronics repair business, of 43 years, over to his son; the cultural attractions of Canberra; his children and marriage of 50 years; surviving bowel cancer; travel plans; gardening and the secret of life: perseverance.
