Description [Melbourne] : Anne Twigg, 2011
188 unnumbered pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 16 x 22 cm (in box)
Summary

An artist's book about child soldiers and the trauma they experience. It uses the Japanese Noh theatre concept of 'ma,' the silence or distancing space between words or actions, to help the reader absorb "the experiences that are recorded in the book. The text pages surprise and require close attention and the coloured, patterned, blank or transparent pages slow the rhythm of the reading." The horrors faced by children forced to fight and kill are balanced by the silence of contemplation - the silence of the soul in torment - in an attempt to achieve healing in the aftermath in self-reflection.--Based on the artist's statement.

Notes

Limited edition of 7 copies, 3 of which are artist's proofs, signed by the artist.

National Library's SR copy is no. 4 and is accompanied by an artist's statement.

"Printed on a Xerox Laser Copier using Kaschmir Light Grey 170gsm paper, Curious Metallic Lustre 120gsm and tracing paper."--Colophon.

Binding

Bound by Monica Oppen. Simplified binding, with signatures sewn on three tapes and covered with oversize piece of white calico. Front and rear boards covered with decorative papers and adhered to calico. Calico is folded over front and rear board fore-edges, creating in effect a reverse quarter binding. Untrimmed calico projects approximately 1 cm beyond top and bottom board edges like a ragged bandage. Title hand lettered in grey on front board. End papers decorated with grey watercolour wash. Book enclosed in a box made from dyed calf vellum, fastened with an improvised non-identical two button document folder-type enclosure with a red string tie.
