- Summary:
-
A commemorative souvenir card for Arthur Butler's England-Australia solo record breaking flight, probably issued by his sponsors, the Plume brand of petrol and Mobiloil, both products of the Vacuum Oil Company. Flying an average of 11 hours a day, Butler beat the previous record set by C.W.A. Scott by 102 minutes, and then went on to fly the plane around Australia on a eight week promotional tour before it was shipped back to England in June 1932. A tipped-on illustration depicts his tiny single-seat, open-cockpit, high-wing Comper Swift CLA 7 monoplane (G-ABRE) banking above the ocean or a blurred field with a background of sky. Details of the record are inset in a text panel in the bottom left, and an oval format portrait of Butler appears in the bottom right hand corner.
- Biography/History:
-
Cecil Arthur Butler (1902-1980), aviator, was born on 8 June 1902 at Sparkhill, Warwickshire, England, and migrated to New South Wales with his family in about 1910. He worked as an aircraft engineer until 1927, when he gained his pilot's licence, and went 'barnstorming'. Ambitious to design and construct his own aircraft, in 1930 he completed and tested a small, all-metal, high-winged monoplane. In 1931 he went to England to study aeronautical design, and later that year he piloted a tiny Comper Swift from England to Australia in the record time of 9 days, 1 3/4 hours. Butler entered commercial aviation with a mail contract in 1934, and after World War II operated Butler Air Transport, the largest and most successful airline in New South Wales, which was taken over by Ansett in 1958.--Condensed from the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
