- Biography/History:
-
The Courtney family were a wealthy family from Surrey, England. Edward Courtney (1793-1871) was an early colonist of Sydney and Port Phillip who made his fortune in Australia beginning as an accountant with the Bank of Australasia in Sydney and ending his career as a government assignee in Port Phillip. His younger brother Sydney (1804-1879) and Sydney's wife Catharine (nee Budd, 1821-1851) remained in England while their father and patriarch Jonathan Courtney, a military apothecary, was forced into exile because of debts and in the mid 1830s fled to Cape Town and St Helena. Edward Courtney had fallen out with his father before he left England for Australia never to return. Other relations include Charles Budd (brother of Catharine Courntey), Elizabeth (sister of Catharine) and her husband Hector Cornthwaite who emigrated to Van Diemen's Land in the 1820s. Charles died back in England after contracting tuberculosis on a whaling ship, and Hector and Elizabeth later moved to New Zealand.
