Notes

Map of Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey showing the dispositions of the Australian forces on 7 August 1915, the day of the attack on The Nek by the 8th and 10th Australian Light Horse Regiments. Shows outposts, dugouts, trenches, and gun positions. Includes notes indicating place names and explaining particular features of the scenes. Relief shown by shading, hypsometric tints, hachures and pictorially.

"The map is replete with detailed and well-informed notes by Hore; these make it plain that the intended readership was not expected to be familiar with the topography of the battle areas. They commence with a necessary explanation beneath the title: 'The observer is standing on a high ridge with his back to the sea. Right rear Anzac Beach; left rear North Beach'. On the left in the distance is Suvla Bay; on the right the Australian front line is marked with a series of arrows. Salient points are identified with a note. Special attention is given to the attack on Lone Pine. The small ridge now known as The Nek is identified with this matter-of-fact comment: 'Where 8th & 10th L.H. cut up'. Another note advises that 'This sketch, being done from memory, is approximate only. There are more Turkish trenches than shown, especially opposite Pope's & Quinn's Post'."--Vendors website.
