In response to the proposal for statehood for the Northern Territory and the draft constitution, the Combined Aboriginal Nations of Central Australia held a Constitutional Convention at Kalkaringi to discuss the issues; the Kalkaringi Statement which addresses issues such as self determination and self government, Aboriginal law, land rights and other rights, political participation, education and justice issues is the result of this meeting.
