Summary

MS Acc02.143 comprises copies of newspapers and journals, some signed, and publications containing articles by Harry Gordon; material relating to the history of journalism in Australia; correspondence, 1948-2000; speeches; material relating to Gordon's published works, including Dawn Fraser (1965), and, The hard way: the story of Hawthorn Football Club (1990); media accreditations, press passes and programs; documents relating to Gordon's work on the Council of the Australian War Memorial and the Australian Olympic Committee; Olympic booklets and map of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Village showing streets named by Gordon; published lectures about journalism in Australia; and, a scrapbook maintained by Gordon's mother containing photographs, letters and press clippings (6 boxes, 13 cartons, 1 A3 carton, 1 oversize item).

The Acc09.135 instalment includes executive and conference minutes of the Australian Olympic Federation, 1928-1939 (1 folder).

Biography/History

Journalist, sportswriter, author and historian. In a career that combined working as a war correspondent and sportswriter, Harry Gordon went from reporting on the Korean War in 1950-1951 to the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952 and the Rome Olympics in 1960. He helped plan for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and the Sydney 2000 Olympics torch relay. Gordon was chairman of Australian Associated Press, and served on the Council of the Australian War Memorial, Australia-China Council and the Australia-Japan Foundation. He has published several books including The embarrassing Australian: the story of an Aboriginal warrior (1962), An eyewitness history of Australia (1976), and, Australia and the Olympic Games (1994). Gordon was the official historian of the Australian Olympic Committee and in 1999 he received the Committee's highest award, the Order of Merit. He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal for service to sports media in 2000, and, in 2006, the International Society of Olympic Historians awarded him its Lifetime Achievement Award.
