History of the Lutheran Finke River Mission; establishment, consolidation, expansion and changes from 1877-1962; initial failures of changes aimed at transferring authority to the Aboriginal people of Hermannsburg lead to reappraisal of Aboriginal culture and changes in Mission policies; successful transfer of agreed responsibilities to Aboriginal people; land rights; Lutheran Church activities and services in Alice Springs, at Amoonguna and at communities on cattle stations; support for the Aboriginal church, including the Aboriginal ministry, literacy and translation of Christian literature into Aboriginal languages; review of political and social background to the development of the Mission; Appendix 1, Aboriginal pastors' stories; Appendix 2, Moses Tjalkabota's life, based on a translation of an untitled manuscript, includes early interactions between missionaries and Aboriginal people, his conversion and his activity as an evangelist; Appendix 3, 'Fifty years of mission works in Hermannsburg, Central Australia', written by missionary F.W. Albrecht.
