Short, former National Secretary of the Federated Ironworkers' Association of Australia, speaks about his father; his recollections of WWI; his childhood around Camperdown, N.S.W.; the Young Communist League; Unemployed Worker's Movement; Worker's Educational Association; working in Mt Isa in 1935; Trotskyism in Australia; conflict with Stalinists in Balmain branch of FIA, 1945-1947; working conditions at Cockatoo Docks; Judd's Socialist Party; joining ALP in 1942; 1944 and 1949 elections for FIA National Secretary; ALP Industrial Groups; The Movement; the battle with Stalinists for control of the FIA after the 1949 election; Nick Origlass; N.S.W. Labor Council; ACTU congresses; his period as FIA National Secretary, 1951-1982; split in Labor Party; his overseas visits; Australian Congress for Cultural Freedom; Whitlam Government; and his activities since his retirement.
