Dmitri is a man who has everything - health, respect, and a beautiful fiancé, Olga. At the onset of war, he goes off to fight for his country. He is injured in battle and loses his left eye. He returns home to find Olga is no longer attracted to him due to his injury, and has moved on to a higher-ranking officer called Sergei. Dmitri returns to battle despite his injury, and finds he is now serving under Sergei, who treats him very badly. After a physical altercation between the two men, Dmitri is sentenced to be shot. At the last possible second, Dmitri's firing squad are killed by German dive-bombers, allowing him to escape with his life. Dmitri joins a band of guerillas, all the while hoping to come across Sergei again so he can clear his name and win Olga back.
