During the period John Barnett was employed by the ABC he also trained his own horses but didn't drive them. The reason he was a trainer but not a driver was based on the ABC's rules that an ABC employee could not have other paid employment. The Western Australian Trotting Association had three licensed categories; a ’Trainer’ was licensed to train horses as a professional and was paid by owners; an ‘Owner/Trainer’ was licensed only to train his/her own horses; and a licensed ’Driver’ was paid for his service with a percentage of the prize money won by the horse he drove. Thus as an ABC employee, John Barnett would be taking money that could be earned by a professional if he drove his own horses and was restricted to training only.
