The illustration "The spirit of service" is from 1932 and is of some of the men who "built the first road at Hammondville Pioneer Homes Settlement".
"Drunks at the Central" is a reflection by Hammond who had "just finished 25 years' voluntary working at the Central Police Court of Sydney". He gives statistics for 1935, 1937 & 1938 on the "increase in drink among women" and for pedestrian & motoring accidents (1938)
