|aMS 5755 comprises copies of letters written in 1973 by A.P. Fleming in his capacity as National Librarian, transcripts of tape recordings made by Fleming during an overseas visit in September and October 1972, and a copy of a letter to Warren Horton, together with enclosures. There is also a photograph of the National Library staff, signed by the staff, and presented to Fleming on his retirement in 1973, and the order of service for the Memorial Gathering, President's Courtyard, Parliament House on 29 March 2001 in honour of Fleming (1 box, 1 fol. item). |

|aJournalist, soldier, public servant and librarian. Allan Percy Fleming was a reporter on the Argus and Courier-mail, before enlisting in the Australian Army in 1939. He served in the Middle East, Greece, North Africa and the Pacific. He joined the Department of Defence in 1947, was trade commissioner in Paris from 1959-1962 and then worked in the Department of Trade and Industry. He was appointed Commonwealth Parliamentary Librarian in 1968 and was the National Librarian from 1970-1973. Fleming died in Melbourne on 18 January 2001. |
