- Biography/History:
-
William (Bill) Reid had been seconded to the Australian Commonwealth Service in London in 1909, having joined the UK Civil Service in the Home Office in 1905. The proposal to send him to Australia in 1914 for training in the import needs of the Australian Government for defence and development was frustrated by the War. By 1920 he was Head of the Supply Branch in Australia House, London and a three year exchange with Mr. G.P. Embleton, Chief Contracts Officer in the Defence Department was arranged whereby Bill was attached to all the stores contracts of Defence Department in the various States. In his subsequent career he became Chief Supply and Transport Officer until he retires. He emigrated to Australia in 1949 with his wife and family of three sons. In August 1943, he flew to the Directorate of War Supplies in Washington to rationalise shipping and documentation between Australia, US and UK. He then flew on across the Pacific to Australia for three months, at the request of Mr J. K. Jensen, Secretary Ministry of Munitions, for beneficial interchange of experiences and for post war liaison and assistance from London.--Information from acquisitions documentation.
