- Summary:
-
Theatres of War explores the transformative power of performance in bringing people together, lifting spirits and offering a form of escapism during times of great adversity. Rare objects, photographs, posters, letters and more are used to tell stories ranging from concert party performers on the Western Front, female impersonators and opera singers in the jungles of New Guinea, to pop stars bringing music from home to Vietnam. Items are drawn primarily from Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection, as well as the Australian War Memorial and private collections. Theatres of War introduces many untold stories of bravery, daring, sadness and joy across the history of Australia’s involvement in conflicts over the past 100 years.
