In 1917, Frederick Spencer Dalton, a backyarder, made the first bakelite moulding powder to be produced in Australia. In that year he began moulding, and selling, plastic buttons he produced in a small factory in Pennell Lane, Marrickville. However, when World War I ended plastics articles flowed in from overseas. The Dalton plant was too small to compete. He ceased moulding and turned to phenolic laminates and varnishes, which could be produced with equipment more able to be managed by the backyarder. The first bakelite moulding powder imported into Australia was in 1922 by the Nally company, to mould plastic T-Model Ford timers. In the twenties wireless and electricity created a growing demand for the new bakelite plastics. There was also a growing demand for handles and knobs for pots and pans. The prospects for Dalton to make his moulded plastics began to look more promising. The first significant commercial production of bakelite began in Australia when Dalton began, in 1924, moulding his Bakelite powder at the Metters Company foundry in St. Peters, Sydney. Over the next five years he worked exclusively for Metters moulding their heat-resistant Coolite knobs and handles fitted to the company’s well-known stoves and kitchenware. In 1928, Spence Dalton again ‘went out on his own’ to form the company H. Dalton & Co.
