- Summary:
-
"Living in the Whitechapel area of East London in 1828, Henry Pearce, was transported to V.D.L. for stealing lead from the nearby London Hospital. Opportunities arose from hard work, initiative and some luck. Beginning as a market gardener at New Town, he progressed; he transported produce from his land in the Huon Valley to Hobart then exported/imported overseas. As his trade grew, he bought ships and built and bought warehouses at Salamanca. Held in high esteem, Henry operated from 24 New Wharf; he became a landlord, trustee, alderman and insurer. In his heyday he enjoyed a £250,000 line of credit. His sons worked with him and continued his legacy in the farming, trading, shipping and business arenas."--Back cover.
