- Summary:
-
Poster depicting Malcolm Turnbull, 29th Prime Minister of Australia, 2015-, produced in the run up to the 2 July 2016 federal election. Features a stylised stencil portrait in pink, tan and cream on a radiating blue and grey background, surrounded by a red border. Title appears at the foot in white lettering, with the ‘i’ in Fizza being a red firework with limp wick. “#whatafizza, f turncoat turnbull” appears in vertical red lettering at the lower right. The artist’s name appears on left edge. A sticker with “Authorised by Michael Agzarian Advision, Studio 51, 61 Marlborough St Surrey Hills NSW 2010. Printed by Street Promotions Australia, 35 Ada Street, Bexley NSW 2207” has been added, lower left, in accordance with Commonwealth Electoral Act requirement for authorisation of electoral advertisements. The design was inspired by Shepard Fairey’s Barack Obama “Hope” poster. The title derives from Paul Keating’s reference to Turnbull as “a dodgy bunger on cracker night: You light him up, there’s a bit of a fizz, but then nothing… nothing.” The poster was amended to comply with rules surrounding election campaign advertising after it was referred to the Australia Electoral Commission. The AEC did not release any details of the complaint, but in an interview the artist said that he had been told that the complaint was lodged by members of the Liberal Party, at the behest of Turnbull, who reportedly “absolutely hates the posters” (The Australian, 26 May 2016, page 7).
