Jack Golson, prehistorian and archaeologist, Professor of Prehistory at the Australian National University from 1970, speaks of his early enthusiasm for history while at school, then archaeology while at Cambridge, his interest in archaeology of Oceania which lead to an appointment at the Australian National University (ANU) in 1961, how he took his first field trip to New Guinea in 1965, how his work on the Manton Plantation in 1967-1968 uncovered evidence of agricultural drainage systems with an age of around 4,000 years, this led to his interest in old agricultural systems buried under peat swamp at Kuk Tea Plantation in the north Waghi Valley spanning from 1970-1977 providing proof of the agricultural history of the region, the problems with using local labour, the complications later of his earlier membership of the Communist Party, his extensive use of aerial photography of the region but which revealed only drainage systems of the past few centuries, his aim to determine why there was this early attempt to drain the swamp and if there was a relationship to the introduction of the sweet potato some centuries ago, the work of Ian Hughes on the history of the local land use concluding that swamp drainage may have ceased with the arrival of the sweet potato, the interdisciplinary nature of the research.
