- Summary:
-
"To many people, Cockatoo Island was a mysterious place covered in grey buildings, visited by ships and plied by boats and ferries. Apart from those involved with the work there, few knew of the enormous contribution being made by the thousands of people who worked there to the nation of Australia. Their work was summarised by the company which leased the island from the Commonwealth of Australia in 1933 on their letterhead: 'Shipbuilders, Dockmasters, Marine and General Engineers'. Those words encompass a very wide range of activity from building and repairing ship for the navy to constructing and maintaining components of essential national infrastructure. One characteristic of the workforce which achieved so much during those 134 years was a tendency for employees to give very long service, sometimes for more than one generation. Don Dinnie is one of those who spent most of their working life on Cockatoo Island. He worked for 48 years and nine months, starting as a Shop Boy and ending his time there as Chief Turbine Engineer. He also lived on the island with his family for nearly 25 years. His work on the island included considerable time as Plant Maintenance Engineer, a role which ensured that he has a detailed knowledge of every aspect of the Island Dockyard and its work."--Back cover.
