The sketchbooks contains drawings dating from 1849 when James Cumming travelled around South Australian mining areas, return voyages to Scotland, including Jamestown, Saint Helena, Great Britain, and Tahiti, French Polynesia (1850 to 1851, 1860-1861), and areas around the Murray River.
- Biography/History:

James Cumming arrived in Adelaide from Glasgow, Scotland on the Royal Archer on 12 December 1846 with his father Peter, mother Elizabeth and siblings. He worked for his father's drapery business Peter Cumming and Sons. James Cumming became an architect in the 1860s. The earliest record of Cumming's architectural work in South Australia is 1864. He is noted for his work on Gay's Arcade, Adelaide. James Cumming died at his son William's home at Bridge Street, Kensington on 28 April 1901, aged 75 years was buried at Mitcham Cemetery--Information from Architects of South Australia database.
