-
An illustrated trade card featuring colour depictions of Australia, including an indigenous Australian man about to throw a boomerang at a mob of three kangaroos in the foreground, and a scene showing group of people swinging from a tree with bark huts in the background. A sulphur-crested cockatoo, a rabbit and two people on horseback are also depicted. Card has a blank cartouche at the foot, and a blank verso, designed to be overprinted with a company's logo and information, as an advertising method. Two versions held: one blank to the front and with a description of L'Australie on the verso (noting that although it is only 40 years since Australia was a penal colony it has become a great commercial power, and describing its inhabitants); the other is titled Australië (the Dutch spelling) and has been overprinted with information about the steamroasted coffee firm Van Leckwyck & Co. of Rotterdam, whose trademark is a red pelican which is shown in red ink on the verso.
