Letters written to William Bottomley of Belfast from Robert Thomson, brother of Bottomley's wife Anna; William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), also Anna's brother; members of the Heap family, related by marriage to Bottomley's sister Elizabeth; and Thomas D. Bottomley, brother of William. The letters include an account of Robert's journey per Simlah to New Zealand in 1851. Robert settled at Owhiro, Otago and describes church, social and farming activities, and his financial arrangements. Thomas D. Bottomley writes from Sydney of conditions there and in Melbourne, the gold fields, and prospects for immigrants, especially in business.
